The plants that have survived, and even thrived, during the winter's cold spells at Tohono Chul Park are mostly native to the Sonoran Desert. Tamarisk is an invasive shrub/tree that was brought here from the Old World and is spreading quickly in Arizona and other states or regions. Just across Arizona’s western border, the Salton Sea is host to hundreds of thousands of avian visitors.
